Blog - investing in music rights and music royalties
Investing in music rights is a growing trend among investors seeking to diversify their portfolios. There are several platforms for purchasing music rights. Here I will compare the most popular European platforms: ANote Music and Bolero Music. Each offers distinct advantages and disadvantages in terms of ease of use, investment opportunities and fees.
ANote Music was launched in August 2020 and is based in Luxembourg. The first player of its kind in Europe, ANote Music has established itself as a trusted platform for music investments.
Bolero Music, meanwhile, is a French company active since 2023 and is positioned predominantly on the French-speaking market, both in terms of users and music. The majority of its catalog is made up of French rap.
ANote Music :
Strengths: ANote Music features an intuitive, ergonomic user interface, recently redesigned to enhance the user experience with simplified navigation. It's easy to explore and invest in music assets.
Catalog financial information is easy to find and particularly clear: analysis of royalties over at least the last 3 years, order book for each catalog, indication of legal aspects...
Weak points: There are two regrettable points in the “portfolio” section: 1) no information on the average purchase price per catalog owned on laptop (but in the app), and 2) the lack of applicable filters in the “Total Value” table, which mixes dividends received, catalog price performance and funds paid into the portfolio.
Bolero Music :
Strengths: Bolero focuses on user interaction. So you can follow other users' portfolios and activities.
Weaknesses: Generally speaking, the interface still needs improvement. We particularly regret the difficulty of finding the life of rights, the lack of clarity of orders/prices on the secondary market, the disorganized presentation of the history of royalties by title...
ANote Music :
Strengths: ANote Music offers investment opportunities analyzed in depth by the ANote team, with a minimum of three years' income. Products are usually offered in the form of catalogs, with several music products in one go. Comparable to an etf, this way of limiting the risk of exposure to a single piece of music.
Weaknesses: In our opinion, there are few catalogs available, and new introductions are also rare. Also, there is little trading volume between users on the secondary market, which can become problematic when you want to sell and there aren't enough buyers, for example.
Bolero Music
Strong points: Bolero introduces new titles on an extremely regular basis, which is particularly appreciated by the community. Also, the prices of new releases are often quite low ($10-$15), which makes them very affordable and (sometimes) allows the value of a track to soar.
It's worth pointing out that the tracks offered by Bolero are also very recent, and come mainly from the French rap scene, which also adds dynamism.
Weak points: the platform gives very little information on the volume of exchanges between users on the secondary market, which can prove problematic when you want to sell. Also, the fact that securities are presented in a solo format exposes holders who have not sufficiently diversified their portfolio. Finally, you need to connect a crypto wallet to use the platform, which is not my cup of tea.
ANote Music :
There are two types of fees on ANote Music:
A fee when funds are added, which is calculated according to the source of the funds (bank transfer, credit card, cryptocurrencies ...)
A fee that is deducted directly from each royalty payment. Note that there are two different fees depending on where the rights were purchased:
For music rights purchased at auction, the fee deducted from each payment is 4%.
For music rights purchased on the secondary market, the fee charged for each payment is 8%.
Bolero Music :
There are two types of fees on Bolero Music:
A transaction fee when buying a track (gas fee, everything happens on the blockchain) of funds, which is calculated according to the use of the blockchain at that moment. So it's a bit random.
It's important to note that when securities are exchanged on the secondary market, the seller also pays a fee.
In conclusion, the best platform depends on your investment style!
ANote Music will be more suited to those who want passive profitability without having to devote too much time to it, whereas Bolero is more suited to active traders and/or connoisseurs and fans of French rap. My personal preference is for ANote Music, but I use both.
Both platforms need to learn from each other: improved interface for Bolero, and more dynamic offers for ANote Music.
Bonus point also for ANote and its “Backstage Pass” loyalty program, which gives cashback on purchases.
